Each step, in more detail

What happens to your order at every stage, and what you see while it does.

  1. Quote: the price shows its working.

Pick a model from the catalog, upload your own STL, OBJ or 3MF file, or paste a link from MakerWorld, Thingiverse or Printables. We slice it the way a printer would, which tells us how many grams of filament it uses and how long it runs.

The price is the filament plus the printer time plus packing, and every quote shows all three lines. Not sure which material to pick? Each model comes with a recommendation and a plain reason.

  2. Dispatch: the next free printer, or a place in line.

When you order, we check every printer on our farm in Elwood, Indiana. Your job goes to one that’s idle, has your material and color loaded, and has a bed big enough for the part. The print starts and your order page switches to the live view.

When every printer is busy, your order waits its turn in a first-in queue. Your order page shows your place in line, and the first order in line starts as soon as a printer frees up.

First in, first printed. A printer coming free takes the order at the top.
  3. Print: layer by layer, and you can watch.

The nozzle traces each layer’s outline, then the bed drops one layer and the next begins. Your order page shows which printer has your job, when it started, the current layer and percent done, and the time left from the printer’s own estimate.

Your print is yours alone: the public farm board only ever shows that a printer is busy.

  4. Pack and deliver: off the plate and onto your doorstep.

When the last layer is down, one of us takes the part off the plate, checks it by hand and boxes it. Your order page moves through each stage as it happens, with tracking once it ships.

Pricing: the plastic plus the printer time.

Every quote is built from two measured numbers: the grams of filament your model uses and the hours it spends on a printer. Each has a fixed rate. Add one packing fee and that’s the price.

Pricing questions

Do small parts cost a lot?
No. The price is built from what your print actually uses. A small part uses a few grams and a few minutes, so it costs a few dollars, plus one packing fee.
Does support material cost extra?
Support filament is weighed like the rest of the print, so it is already counted in the grams on your quote.
Is the quote the final price?
That's the intent: a locked quote is the price of the print. Shipping is shown separately at checkout, before you pay.
Why do some materials cost more?
Specialty filaments cost more per gram, and many print slower, so they also use more printer time. Both show up as separate lines.
